Building the MythThe FAI Rogallo Class
In 1975, after a survey led by British Ann Welch, then Vice-President of the World Airsports Federation (FAI), the International Hang Gliding Committee (CIVL) became part of the FAI. The first president was Dan Poynter, the Secretary Harry Robb, both from the USA.
There was much to discuss: sporting code, accidents, proficiency standards, insurance, manufacturing, schools… and competitions. It was decided that a World Championship would take place in 1976. Rules were detailed. There would be three Classes: Standard Rogallo, Weight-shift Control-Flexible Wing, and Open. (btm-17)
And thus, Rogallo's deception officially entered the world of international sports. With the support of Ann Welsh and Dan Poynter, both authors of poorly researched books where Dickenson was not cited.
It will be short-lived. The 1977 CIVL plenary redefined the classes in 1, 2, and 3.
