When Rogallo’s written or spoken words are cited extensively, they are in italic.
The early days of Francis M. Rogallo are not described in many places. Stories found on the Internet mostly start in 1935 with Rogallo getting a degree at Stanford University, or in 1936, when he began working for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA).
The most complete information on the subject is found in the book And The World Could Fly, published by the International Airsports Federation (FAI – Fédération Aéronautique Internationale). Stéphane Malbos and Noel Whittall co-wrote it. (doc-13)
Stéphane Malbos wrote the Rogallo chapter as Rogallo told/wrote it from:
- A 1997 three-day interview in Kitty Hawk, NC;
- A 1997 six-day driving trip with the Rogallo family when they attended the Coupe Icare, France;
- Documents given by Francis Rogallo, in particular the 1951 Ford Times (doc-01), the 1987 North Carolina Hall of Fame reception address (doc-09), the 1989 A Brief History of Hang Gliding and Paragliding (doc-11), and the 1991 Wakayama Address (doc-12).
- The 1952 Mechanix Illustrated (doc-02), and the 1990 A Brief History of Hang Gliding and Paragliding (doc-10)
